Fight the January Blues

on Tuesday, 16 January 2024. Posted in Doctor of Fitness

It's common to feel depressed in January for several reasons. The Christmas season often brings a sense of anticlimax, where either you had a great time and it's now over, or you didn't, but it seems everyone else did.

Many of us reflect on our lives as the New Year begins. This may involve acknowledging that things did not go as planned. We may review past resolutions and realize that we could not keep them or feel sad about those no longer with us. The pandemic has made the past few years challenging for all of us, and this difficult time may continue, making January even more depressing.

January blues and the New Year can have a negative impact on our mental health, causing feelings of despair. After the indulgences of the holiday season, returning to the regular daily routine can be daunting.

In anticipation of the dreaded January Blues, here are some ways to overcome them.

  1. Go on a trip. You don't necessarily need to take a long vacation; even a short weekend getaway can positively impact your overall outlook.
  2. Eat nutritious food. Eating a healthy diet rich in grains, dairy, seafood, nuts, and fruits and vegetables will help you feel better.
  3. Get enough sleep. This helps maintain good mental health, as sleep deprivation can cause agitation, nervousness, and anxiety.
  4. Do fun winter activities. Moving your body is a fantastic way to elevate your mood and has been shown to help prevent depression.
  5. Stay warm. Our bodies seek warm comfort, which is why we often seek out the sun or enjoy a comforting cup of hot beverage.

January may not be the most thrilling month, but focusing on the positive things in your life can chase away the blues.

What are you doing for others?

on Tuesday, 09 January 2024. Posted in Doctor of Fitness

Martin Luther King Jr. posed one of life's most important questions, "What are you doing for others?"

On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared the third Monday of January a federal holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. This national holiday is the only one that is also Congress-designated, where a "day on" is encouraged instead of a "day off."

The significance of the MLK Day of Service has grown over the past 25 years as more Americans understand that being a citizen means actively participating in the betterment of their communities.

What can you do for others this Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service?

The best way to celebrate the holiday is by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others, regardless of race or ethnicity. Here are some ideas you can do on your own or with a group:

  • Donate blood
  • Participate in trash clean-up
  • Study the teachings and life of Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Participate in a soup kitchen volunteer program with friends.
  • Organize a book drive to benefit low-income communities.
  • Collect and donate food items to your local food bank.
  • Make senior citizens feel less alone.

Serving others plays an important role in building communities, empowering people, breaking down barriers, finding answers, and bringing us closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community. It enriches those who choose to serve and dissolves barriers by uniting people from all backgrounds.

Although taking a chance can be scary, it can lead to incredible opportunities. Stepping outside your comfort zone open doors that may have been closed otherwise.

Staying true to your objectives is a must when taking a bold step. Understand the reason behind your actions and ensure that your priorities are in order. Even if an opportunity appears to be a good idea, it's crucial to avoid it if it doesn't align with your core values. If your accomplishments go against your mission, they will hold little value.

Winter Fun

on Tuesday, 26 December 2023. Posted in Doctor of Fitness

The leaves have mostly fallen from the trees and the birds have flown south, signs that winter is approaching. Instead of just waiting for the snow to melt and the beach weather to return, it's better to make a winter bucket list full of enjoyable cold-weather activities. Put on your snow boots, wear some gloves, and take advantage of the change in season.

Are you brave enough to go outside and endure the cold? Here are some ideas for you!

  • Bask in the gorgeous view by walking in the park, biking or jogging is also great. Just make sure to bundle up to stay warm.
  • Try outdoor sports. From ice skating to snowboarding, sledding, and skiing, there are tons of fun things to do in the snow.
  • Make a snowman or snow angel. Roll and pat snow to build a snowman. You can also make it into a contest and see who builds the craftiest Frosty. If you are brave enough to lie on the snow, try making the classic snow angel!

If you are more of an indoor person once the temperature drops, we have several fun suggestions for you!

  • Watch the snowfall. Stay behind the comfort of your window, sipping a hot drink while admiring the white snow falling from the sky.
  • Try out new recipes. Are you bored with the usual hot cocoa drink? Spice it up and look up other fun and delicious drinks and snacks perfect for the cold weather. It is also a good time to bake cookies and pies for the whole family to share.
  • Camp out in the living room. Make a fort and snuggle together, sharing stories and eating food. You can also watch winter-themed movies!
  • Plan a game night. Pick games where many people can join, like Bingo and Scrabble. Offer prizes for the winners to make it more exciting.

There is no shortage of things to do during the cold season. The people you are with matter most when planning for a memorable and fun winter.

Merry Christmas!

on Tuesday, 19 December 2023. Posted in Doctor of Fitness

Christmas is recognized as a federal holiday in the United States. However, the term "national" holiday is often used mistakenly. The notion that Christmas is a national holiday in America may have resulted from the increasing popularity of some 19th-century customs such as sending Christmas cards, decorating Christmas trees, and teaching children about Santa Claus.

Americans were already known for celebrating Christmas even before the holiday was declared as both a legal and religious one. Because of its multicultural nature, there are many common Christmas customs in the United States. Many of these traditions may sound familiar to you since they resemble those found in other countries.

Most houses are adorned with colorful lights and Christmas figures, like Santa Claus, reindeer, and Christmas trees. At night, streets and neighborhoods light up magically. There are even holiday lights contests in countless locations!

Many business establishments offer special holiday sales starting in early November and extending through the end of the year. If you are looking to score some sweet deals, this is the best time to shop ‘till you drop.

This is also the perfect time to rest from work and get together with your family and friends. Visit some famous Christmas attractions like the stunning Rockefeller Center ice rink facing a magnificent and enormous Christmas tree and the life-size gingerbread house in San Francisco.

The holiday season is a special and enchanting time that often seems straight out of a movie. You can feel the festive season in the air no matter where you are and what you plan to do this holiday. Enjoy!

Yoga basics

on Tuesday, 12 December 2023. Posted in Doctor of Fitness, Toning & Shaping

Learning to do yoga can be intimidating, especially considering the poses that seem to defy gravity and the wide variety of class options. However, you don't need fancy equipment or the flexibility of a gymnast to practice yoga. As long as you get the basics, you can start your yoga journey to fitness.

Yoga is a practice that combines physical and spiritual aspects and originates from Indian philosophy. It has been around for thousands of years and offers a wide range of forms, from gentle, contemplative practices to more challenging physical workouts. Mind-body exercises usually involve performing a series of physical poses while practicing deep breathing techniques.

To get started on yoga, you need to familiarize yourself with some basic poses, which are the building blocks of the practice. It is good to learn these as you build your yoga practice regularly. As you move through each pose, remember to breathe slowly and steadily. If a posture is challenging, take a break after completing it, especially if you're out of breath, and resume the pose once your breathing has returned to normal. The objective is to hold each pose for a few steady breaths before moving on to the next one.

The great thing about yoga is that it's accessible to everyone, regardless of age, weight, or fitness level. It's a powerful tool for calming the mind and strengthening the body. Don't be intimidated by yoga jargon, fancy studios, or difficult poses - anyone can practice yoga and reap its rewards.

Don't get discouraged if your first class does not go as planned. It may take a few classes to find a teacher who inspires and encourages you to practice regularly. Once you have chosen the right class structure and instructor, you will begin to feel more in control of your life.
